I had a conversation with a close friend today. She kept staring at my T- shirt with the prints of all of the members of Wu Tang (RZA,GZA, Inspectah Deck, U-GOD, Masta Killa, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Old Dirty Bastard and Method Man). She goes “NO WAY METHOD MAN IS IN WU TANG? SINCE WHEN?” “OLD DIRTY BASTARD HE DIED? WHAT? WHO?” As I tried to feed her the history of the Wu Tang Clan she interrupted by saying we should get matching Wu Tang shirts. With a confused look i replied by saying “why would you purchase the shirt if you dont even know the members of Wu?” she laughs and says “just because I dont know the members doesent mean I cant rep a Wu shirt, I dont need to know their names who cares or who cares about their history I dont need to know anything about them” As I sit there taking in that thought I think how can today’s youth be repping T shirts such as Wu Tang, RUN DMC or the Ramones without knowing the artist? without respecting them and appreciating their talent. Has it only become a symbol? without any meaning? I’ve become very disappointed with todays youth. It shouldnt be about looking cool or trying to gain some respect, it’s about supporting the artist and enjoying the gift of their music.
